Kenneth MacMillan Senior Choreographic Award 2011 – winners announced

The annual Kenneth MacMillan Senior Choreographic Award took place at the Lower School, White Lodge on 15 December 2011.

Sponsored by Lady MacMillan, the Senior Choreographic Award is designed to encourage students from Years 10 and 11 (ages 13 - 16) to create original work, but also to become involved in all aspects of choreographic creation from conception, to casting, rehearsing, directing, costuming and lighting.

There were 12 original works entered this year, performed in front of a distinguished judging panel comprising former students Administrative Director of The Royal Ballet, Kevin O’Hare and choreographer Matthew Hart. They were joined by prodigious Canadian choreographer, Matjash Mrozewski.

Prizes are given to enable winners to attend a variety of theatrical productions and to experience different styles of direction and choreography.

The 2011 Winners are:

1st: Charlotte Edmonds (Year 10)
‘City Life’
Music: Robert Schumann - Piano Quintet in E Flat Major - Allegro

2nd: Diogo Barbosa (Year 11)
‘Fever’
Music: Dmitri Shostakovich - String Quartet No 8 in C Minor

3rd: Maya Negishi (Year 11)
‘Aftermath’
Music: Giuseppe Verdi - Requiem

The John Mitchell Award is presented each year to the student who presents the ‘best folder’ containing information relating to development of the design and choreography of the piece.

This year’s winner was Laura Myers (Year 11) for Departing Soldiers - Music: Francis Poulenc - Trois Novelettes – first movement
