The Royal Ballet School’s Summer Season 2010 opens with five performances at the Linbury Studio Theatre from Wednesday 30 June to Saturday 3 July, culminating in the end-of-year matinée on the main stage of The Royal Opera House on Sunday 11 July.

Particular highlights of the Summer Season 2010 are two important heritage works: Antony Tudor’s Jardin aux lilas (Music: Ernest Chausson, Poeme for violin and orchestra) at both the Linbury Studio Theatre and, in a fully staged version, on the main stage at the Royal Opera House and Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto (Music: Dmitri Shostakovich, Piano Concerto No. 2)

Jardin aux lilas was originally created for Ballet Rambert with its first performance taking place at the Mercury Theatre, London on 26 January 1936. This production has been staged especially for The Royal Ballet School by Kirk Peterson for the Antony Tudor Ballet Trust. The premiere of Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto was at the Deutsche Oper Ballet, Berlin on 30 November 1966, where MacMillan had just become Ballet Director.

Works choreographed by former Royal Ballet School students also feature during the Summer Season 2010 with Alastair Marriott and Samantha Raine both presenting world premieres at the Linbury. Marriott’s Schrumpf (Music: Kurt Schwertsik, Schrumpe-Symphonie) showcases the talent of graduate year students while Samantha Raine’s Wand of Youth, to Edward Elgar’s eponymous music, features Lower School students. Liam Scarlett’s Toccata, to Britten’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, will be performed on the main stage on 11 July. Toccata was especially created for The Royal Ballet School graduate students and was performed by them in Toronto in November 2009 as part of the Assemblée Internationale celebrating 50 years of the National Ballet School of Canada.

Co-Director of Creative Learning with Wayne McGregor, Random Dance, Kerry Nicholl’s Vein (music: John Adams, Shaker Loops) will be performed at the Linbury, exposing students to the compositional methodologies employed by Wayne McGregor, Random Dance. American choreographer Parrish Maynard’s Fractals (music: Kenneth Kirschner, March 3, 1993) will be performed both at the Linbury and on the main stage. Fractals was created in 2008 for San Francisco Ballet School Trainees following their participation in a Forsythe Technique Workshop held during the School’s Summer Session.

Works by Royal Ballet School teachers Diane van Schoor and Antonio Castilla will also be performed throughout the Summer Season with a selection of national dances and excerpts from the classical repertoire completing the programme.

The culmination of the Summer Season 2010 is the spectacular Grand Défilé on the main stage when more than 200 Royal Ballet School students fill the stage in a fast-moving, vibrant display of virtuosity.

Director of The Royal Ballet School, Gailene Stock AM comments:

The Royal Ballet School is committed to engaging its students with the widest possible range of choreographic styles and offering many opportunities to perform these in public. The wide range of styles is evident in the diversity of works in the programme both at the Linbury and on the main stage.

We are particularly delighted to be performing great heritage works by two masters of choreography: Kenneth MacMillan and Antony Tudor. Tudor’s Jardin aux lilas is a nuanced essay in subtle psychological expression which will stretch the students both technically and dramatically. We are extremely grateful to Kirk Peterson for working so hard in engaging our students with such an important work. Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto returns to the repertoire enabling our students to explore the choreographic style of one of the most celebrated former students of The Royal Ballet School.
